Orwell Singers

The Orwell Singers

Our stated aim is ‘to provide an enjoyable opportunity for people to sing a wide repertoire of music, both secular and non-secular’ and we make a point of including as wide a range of music as possible – though nothing very ‘avant garde’ and not much early music at the moment. Quite a bit of John Rutter, pieces from ‘Encores for Choirs’, songs from shows, folk songs etc but we are open to suggestions and would welcome some new ideas.

We are a very friendly group and meet on Monday evenings in the Methodist Schoolroom in Orwell during school term times. Our members come not only from Orwell and other surrounding villages but also from Cambridge and Royston. At the moment the choir consists of about 10 sopranos, 10 altos, 4 basses and 4 tenors, We do not audition new members but they have a trial period after which we (and they) decide if we are suited.  Many of our members also sing with other choirs in order to take part in a ‘big work’ and there are some good soloists in our ranks, too.

We put on a Christmas Concert in December, which usually includes a bit of audience participation, fun items and a compilation from a show such as West Side Story, Oklahoma, Lion King etc and this takes place in the Village Hall. We also do something in the summer term, often for a good cause, and we have been known to do weddings and WI events - whatever comes along – usually in local churches or village halls. We would like to try holding a workshop or a Come & Sing, to encourage more people to join us.

I hope this gives you an idea of who we are and what we sing – do come and meet us!
