Our stated aim is
‘to provide an enjoyable opportunity for people to sing a wide
repertoire of music, both secular and non-secular’ and we make a
point of including as wide a range of music as possible – though
nothing very ‘avant garde’ and not much early music at the moment.
Quite a bit of John Rutter, pieces from ‘Encores for Choirs’, songs
from shows, folk songs etc but we are open to suggestions and would
welcome some new ideas.
We are a very friendly group and meet on Monday evenings in the
Methodist Schoolroom in Orwell during school term times. Our members
come not only from Orwell and other surrounding villages but also
from Cambridge and Royston. At the moment the choir consists of
about 8 sopranos, 8 altos, 4 basses and 6 tenors. We do not audition
new members but they have a trial period after which we (and they)
decide if we are suited. Many of our members also sing with other
choirs in order to take part in a ‘big work’ and there are some good
soloists in our ranks, too.
We put on a Christmas Concert in December and a Summer Concert in
late June/early July. These include a wide range of music of various
styles, a bit of audience participation, fun items and songs from
shows such as West Side Story, Oklahoma, Lion King etc and take
place in Orwell Village Hall. We hope to hold another workshop or
possibly a ‘Come & Sing’ to encourage more people to join us.
We have a regular accompanist, Adrian Jacobs, and have just
appointed a new Director of Music, Dr Alan Morgan, so we have high
hopes for the future.
Our new term begins on Monday 17th January 2011 so do
come along and see if you would like to join us. For more
